To tell you the truth, I was not very enthusiastic about a Superman movie. I enjoy watching the dark and logical Batman more than the passionate and almost omnipotent Superman, but the chance to see it on IMAX was a huge plus for me. The difficulty it seemed was actually going to the movies; there were so many other blockbusters floating around that Superman seemed 10 years too old.

This weekend I finally made saw Superman Returns and I have mixed feelings. There were a couple of times where it was incredible, especially whe Superman saves the 747 and “returns” to the world. That closest scene to that one, where a superhero is so definitive, would be when Spiderman was experimenting with his web slinging; which wasn’t even close to evoking the same emotion as seeing Superman stop the plane from crashing. After that however, the movie gradually went downhill with a mediocre Luthor plot, and too much time spent on Superman’s relationship with Lois.

The IMAX additions were good, and bad. The scene I mentioned before was in 3D, which made the action inside the plane incomprehensible. The other scenes weren’t good enough to blog about here. The best part about the IMAX experience was probably the previews. They were rendered in such a way that it actually felt like 3D!

Overall, Superman Returns wasn’t bad, and originally I thought of giving it a 4 out of 5. But I think I was being influenced by the flash IMAX effects and so I say it’s really a 3.5 out of 5.
