When I ranted about the benefits to email by having your own domain, I mentioned that if you had to give your email to sign up for a website and wasn’t sure if you were giving your address to a spam trap, you could just give thesite@yourdomain.com. I still believe in that method and it does work.

Of course, I failed to notice that GMail had this functionality as well. You simply give your email as your.name+thesite@gmail.com and if your email ends up in a spam list, you’ll know who violated your privacy.

This approach is not as fail proof (although cheaper) as having your domain, the spammer could just parse out all GMail addresses that have a + in them, and delete everything after the plus sign and none would be the wiser.
