While i was vacationing, i read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser which is an exposé into the practices of the fast food industry, it guides you on an in depth tour of how the major chains were formed and how they manuveured themselves to being the people’s choice for “nourishment” worldwide. It also examines the inner workings of meat packing including the many unethical and unsanitary practices in the industry. There are some crazy statistics in the book, for example the average American eats three hamburgers and four servings of french fries a week. I suppose I’m a below average fast food eater, and probably eat that much in a month. That means there is most likely a significant portion of the population which eats hamburger and fries for more than half their meals a week! All in all, it does a great job of making you want to avoid fast food for the rest of your life, and even to become a vegetarian; although that was not the goal of the book.
