After going to the Rogers Cup on Sunday, I ended up watching Wimbledon to wrap up my Tennis Day 2006. Wimbledon is about a male player on the tennis tour who is on his last legs. He is one of two Englishmen playing at Wimbledon, and plans to retire immediately after the tournament (win or lose — much more likely on the latter). What he isn’t, is Hugh Grant, although the role seems to be suited for him (you know: English accent, romatic comedy).

That is until he meets the young American tennis phenom played by Kirsten Dunst. When her character was first introduced, I was really annoyed by her acting, but I came to realize that she was just playing the brash American characterization. Anyways, the two players, on different ends of their careers, aim to win Wimbledon.

So then, it devolves into your generic romance set on a tennis court, with your normal cliché endings, stereotypical metaphors, and villains. There was some tennis plays but these were limited to highlights. I was impressed by some of the cinematography during these scenes where they applied several matrix-like effects on the ball movement.

So this film would be interesting for tennis fans, but otherwise is a fairly generic romantic (comedy). I think Wimbledon deserves 2 out of 5 stars.
