the question on my mind the last few days is whether or not we get to keep our @uwaterloo.ca email address after we graduate. i certainly hope so because i’ve been giving out my school email a lot recently and it would suck to have to change it. anyways, i’ve asked several people and no one seems to have a definite answer. here’s what i found.

after you graduate, if you join the UW alumni online e-community you will have lifetime forwarding email address @alumni.uwaterloo.ca. this kinda sucks because you have the extra alumni. part in your email.

every person associated at waterloo receives a unique id and so it would make sense that we will own that id for the rest of our lifetime. so i went about trying to figure out how to change the forwarding on our id@uwaterloo.ca email. well it turns out that in order for your @uwaterloo forwarding to be active, you must have an entry listed in UWdir and an email in that entry. so as long as we have an entry in UWdir, you’ll have forwarding.

then there’s this confusing field called inactive. it looks like that if you are no longer enrolled in class at waterloo, your UWdir will be turned to inactive but my expert opinion is that it doesn’t remove your entry from the UWdir.

anyways, i was still really confused about the whole thing so i did what guys never do, i asked someone. the reply i got back wasn’t really what i wanted to hear. basically you exist in uwdir for about 5 years after you graduate (in case you want to log on to quest or take courses etc). your email forwarding however stops after a year. so i guess it’s time to switch those email addresses!
