After goofing around for awhile, I ended up on the Picasa Web Albums page and signed up for an invite. Later that day, I received an invite and downloaded Picasa 2.5 Beta.
I’m not really interested in the Web Albums (what < 1GB of space? guess photos aren't compressible), but the changes to Picasa are an improvement. The thumbnail pictures on folders are back (YES! so excited) as well as a better UI for sorting your folders (also YES!). I haven’t had time to try all the bells and whistles yet but it restores my faith in the program. No more Picasa 1.
