there’s an interesting article on ebay by cringely (who writes pretty interesting stuff on a technological slant). it’s basically saying that ebay is revolutionizing the way business is done around the world — that is not in the way the internet merchants were supposed to, but by creating entrepreneurs from everyday people. some interesting points: ebay could promote the use of public accountability systems (think enron, worldcom, whoever’s next) and it ranks among walmart and sears as the largest retailers in the states! newayz cringely believes that ebay will be the big thing in the future, however i don’t think that will happen as he sees it. first off, i’ve noticed that many auctions end without any bids; eventually ebayers will realize that people won’t buy stuff like sweaty socks and begin to leave the ebay community. secondly, there’s way too much garbage listed to actually browse through a category and find something, you have to know exactly what you’re looking for so you can search for it. that takes all the fun out of bargin hunting, it’s like taking away walking-around-a-mall from the mall.
