nauru, a tiny island in the south pacific is slowly crumbling into lord of the flies-like anarchy. when the going was good, it was actually a pretty decent place to live: there was free medical care, free schooling (even post-secondary!) and the government employed 95% of the population; but its involvement in money laundering, bad investments decisions and other spending fiascos eventually caught up to them. the rise and fall of nauru is actually pretty cool; one of those things that you’re surprised to see in real life at such a large scale. i liken it to teens that are let loose with a limited (but large) sum of money; they spend it on fancy cars and such, and when their supply’s dwindling they try and recoup their money thru (questionable) means.
