1995 is the year that I have a huge selection of music from. it just happened that a lot of used CDs that I bought were from that year. Recently, I had been thinking that 1995 isn’t that old. I don’t feel the same way listening to these decade-old songs as I did when I was listening to 80s music in the 90s. Plus, the radio stations are playing songs from that era.

But sadly, i think this is a symptom of nostalgia. The mid-90s were the years that I really started listening to mainstream (i.e. pop) music, and I shouldn’t mistaken my impressionable pop music brain for timeless classics. Looking back in my iTunes library, my pre-1996 library is filled with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Radiohead, Oasis, Queen and the Smiths. Most of these artists I only recently started getting into (well as in after y2k).

The songs that I liked back then, the Mariah Carey and the Ace of Base just aren’t that great anymore. To say that my musical tastes have shifted is an understatement. I started liking eurodance to downloading lots of trance music to finally listening to a lot of rock. A brief look at the songs I’ve been listening to in the last 3 years would reveal lots of Franz Ferdinand, the Strokes and other semi-indie bands. They seem so hip and good now, but 10 years from now I may find them as cool as the Pet Shop Boys and the Real McCoy.
