usatoday has an article about people using their cellphones as their primary phone, and no longer having a land line. it’s not too surprising that people have started doing this when the wireless carriers offer unlimited nights/weekends for a modest fee.
but why are wireless providers offering unlimited nights/weekends? is it because otherwise their capacity wouldn’t be maxed out at those times? while i don’t know how much business is done over cell phones during the day, i don’t think it offsets the amount of people i see having long conversations at night. i see 4 or 5 people who are chatting away everytime i take the bus after rush hour, whereas i see none during the day. it seems more likely that the capacity is maxed out at night than during business hours.
so the only other reason i can think of is because the providers want to get you hooked on using a cellphone. if you get used to talking on the bus, you’ll have the urge to chat during the day too, and that’s where they’ll make millllions. so if this is just a bait, then the price will go up. if not, then they will realize that this unlimited thing is costing them a lot, and they could make more money from it. so the price will go up. that won’t help the wireless (r)evolution.
