Today, I attended the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference (CUTC) for the first time, somewhat ironic as I’m not an undergrad anymore. In fact, I was invited to be a mentor in the ThinkTank event.

Specifically, my topic was to discuss with CUTC delegates about Making Connections:

Today, approximately 5/6 of the world population lives in developing countries. With the ever expanding presence of the Internet and the development of other cheap technologies, how will the information and economic differences between the developed and developing countries be affected?

Of course I am no expert in this field nor do I have any first hand experience. So I approached it as facilitating discussion in my group of delegates. Some interesting points were raised such as when we bring technology into undeveloped countries, we are imposing our western culture onto those countries — which may not necessarily be welcome or warranted.

Interestingly, I also got to meet the CTO of Amazon, Werner Vogels. i had been reading up on some of his work that he did at Cornell for one of my previous courses.
