There was a recent Android sale to celebrate 25 billion downloads, where every day, for five days, several apps and games would be on sale for 25¢. Of course I bought some, so here are some new games I played (as well as some older ones):

  • Granny Smith
I hadn’t heard about this game previously but took a flyer on it at 25¢ because it was quirky. You play a grandmother who digs up here old roller skates and chases a thief to get back her (granny smith) apples. It’s a bit silly, but funny so it kept my attention for awhile. But as I got further on in levels (especially the space ones), the difficulty started ramping up and it become frustrating since it is pretty much an auto-run platformer.
  • Dungeon Village
This is another Kairosoft game, and I was hesitant to buy it because the last one I played (Pocket League) was a bit repetitive. I’m glad I bought this one as I think the gameplay is better (although the mechanics are almost exactly the same). You play the role of a mayor in a town, where RPG adventurers come to slay monsters. So you can build shops (inn, armor, weapons, etc) and other buildings for them.
  • Cut The Rope
This is a famous Android game that doesn’t require introduction. I had wanted it for awhile and just missed out on it when it was 10¢, so I finally bought it for 25¢. The only problem was that I wanted the HD version but it didn’t seem to support my phone or tablet, so I had to buy the SD version.
  • Turkey Season
This game was a free one from Amazon over the American Thanksgiving weekend. It’s a simple game where you have to shoot turkeys as they come across the screen. As you get more proficient, you have the opportunity to buy power-ups that help you (and make things harder). A simple diversion that is worth the price I paid.
  • Polara
The second Amazon freebie that I downloaded in a week; this one because it got a lot of great reviews on Amazon. This one is also an auto-run platformer where you have to jump and change color to match your enemies (kind of like Ikaruga). I tried the first level and it was pretty fun, but the second level is brutal (they put in too many new gameplay elements that needed exact timing) so I gave up. If I only had one game to play and wanted a challenge, this might have been good; but not these days…
  • Duke Nukem 3D
The third freebie from Amazon in a week – I downloaded this one because I really enjoyed the PC version back when I was a teenager (it was funny and crude). It looks really bad when I tried it on my tablet (the textures are OK but the enemies are all blurry!) and the controls were too loose – I could move around ok, but I kept looking at the wrong spots (not sure how you could play without auto-aim). Playing this made me wish that I just played it with a keyboard.
